Oil & Gas : Design vs Fabrication vs Processing

Oil & Gas : Design vs Fabrication vs Processing

So, there are several fields of oil and gas job opportunities.

Another field in the oil and gas industry is the design field. These companies were called as the consultants, and their main purpose is to design, calculate, perform analysis and consult the fabricators in several matters.

In construction or fabrication field, the sequence of project development goes like this.
First, there is a client who wants a new, or to expand oil and gas facilities.
The client will seek for the best consultant + best price. In Malaysia, it is very obvious that MMC is the best oil and gas consultant.

Several consultants will bid the project (to design the facility) and give their best shot to get the tender.

Once they get the tender, they will start the management team, engineering team, design team and so on. The consultants will start the designing within the client’s desired period.
The design will always consist of several engineering in different fields, such as mechanical, piping, rotating machine and instrumentation.

Of course piping engineering is the main lead here, because of their direct requirement to oil and gas. Piping engineers will need to provide details of pipes to be used. They will need to calculate the right thickness for pipe, for the pipe specific purpose, whether it is chemical flows in them, whether it is oil or gas, whether it is water or whatever. The piping engineers also should know the material to be used for certain pipes, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized or fiberglass. After they design the piping or the pipeline, they also need to run the stress analysis for piping, and locate the pipe supports at a desired span.

The mechanical engineering will be the less yet important lead to backup the piping engineering. Mechanical engineering in this field always related to the steel structures such as the pipe supports, the pipe racks, ladder, ladder cage, handrail, guard tower and whatever steel structure it is. The mechanical structure engineer should know how to pick the steel plate thickness for structures, or the usage of angle bar, c channel, flat bar, solid bar, and be familiar with the bolt and nuts, screws, nails, welding and so on. Mechanical structure engineers also should have been familiar with stress analysis, material strength and other material behaviors as well.

Rotating machine is another story but still important. Rotating machine in oil and gas exists as the pumps, the fan, the coolers, and the turbine and so on. This engineering will need one to be familiar with the speed of rotation, which depending on the requirements of facility. Well, these machines will have to be designed if there is no rotating machine meets the spec in stock. One should think about the blades, the material, and the maximum rotation per minute it can go.

Pheww!

I think that, most of the design consultant has crazy heads. Most of them may have extra memory, or excellent use of their brains.

Additional Fact:

Consultants will need more computers, with the latest specifications and related software to do their design simulations.

Additional power backup to avoid blackout which to save the program or simulation running in computers.

Will need lot of draftsmen.

Will need lot of concentrations.

They work at fixed hour, and live at fixed address.

MMC is the craziest and richest oil and gas consultant; they already bought their own private airport!
